About Mould

There are roughly 100,000 different species of mould and each one behaves and is formed differently.

One common factor is that mould starts out as a fungus and it needs moisture to grow. Mould can grow exceptionally quickly by releasing large numbers of spores into the air. When the spores attach themselves onto favourable environments they will start to colonise. It is difficult for mould to begin growing at temperatures below 4C, hence why food is refrigerated at this temperature.

Mould can be common in all types of buildings, particularly in the autumn and winter months. A musty odour, stains and furry growth on surfaces are strong indications of a mould outbreak. If this is the case, it needs expert attention to ensure that the root cause is identified and the active spores are properly removed.

What happens when you do not remove mould?

Choosing not to remove mould is never a good idea. It spreads quickly and it looks unsightly. It releases spores into the environment and the more mould in your home, the more spores will be released. Left untreated, mould will cause damage to your home which may be difficult and costly to repair. Along with its unpleasant musty odours, long term exposure to mould can be detrimental to the human health. This is because mould spores are a known irritant and can cause a number of health issues. Health effects of mould can include skin rashes, frequent sneezing, breathing difficulties and sore itchy eyes.

The severity of a person’s reaction to mould is a combination of the concentration of spores in the air, the length of exposure, and the person’s level of sensitivity to mould allergens.
If you suffer from allergies or respiratory problems you should avoid contact with mould. Treatment of mould should be carried out by a professional mould specialist.

The NHS recognises that living with mould is unhealthy and that long term exposure can cause various symptoms, including:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • Skin rashes
  • Post nasal drip
  • Asthma attacks
  • Aspergillosis
